Young Scholars Program Field Trip to MassDOT & MBTA Command Center

On Thursday July 12, the Young Scholars took a field trip to MassDOT and the MBTA Command Center, where they learned about the field of transportation and what the future of transportation looks like. In the morning, the students connected with former Center for STEM program counselor and current Policy Assistant at MassDOT Dan Sullivan, as he gave a presentation on what the MassDOT does, as well as a segment on self-driven cars. Anna Gartsman, Manager of Data Analytics at MassDOT engaged the students through a scenario-based activity about the MBTA and wait time. In the afternoon, students went to the MBTA Command Center, where they had the opportunity to observe the various control rooms for trains and buses, as well as hear a talk on where the future of the MBTA is headed. Many students even had the chance to group together and explore Boston once they were done with the day.
