The Northeastern University Summer STEM Program (NUSSP) is a free, academic program run by the Center for STEM Education, which takes an active role in shaping education in students entering grades 6, 7 and 8.
The eight day academic day program emphasizes increasing students’ mathematics/science skills, introducing them to college life, and stimulating their interest in science and engineering as a potential career path.
Each day, students participate in activities that include problem solving, study, research, writing and communication skills incorporated with biology, chemistry, physics, design concepts, and field excursions. Activities are led by Northeastern graduate students and supported by undergraduate science and engineering students. Every lesson is followed by hands-on activities to ensure full understanding of the subject being taught.

The Northeastern University Summer STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Program is organized to provide activities, experiments, projects, and field experiences for rising 6th, 7th, or 8th graders. The program promotes science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education and supports historically under-served and underrepresented students with limited opportunities. Students attend the program free of charge. Students currently in grade 5, 6, or 7 who have an interest in science and mathematics, at least a B average in science and mathematics courses. Immediate family members of Northeastern University faculty may apply to the program but are not given any special preference.

Each day, students will attend classes that include problem solving, research, critical thinking and communication skills incorporated with biology, chemistry, physics, environmental sciences, earth sciences, engineering, technology, design concepts, and field excursions.
The program will be held on the campus of Northeastern University located at 360 Huntington Avenue in Boston, MA 02115.
- Students must be MA residents and live within a 30 mile radius of Northeastern University.
- Students Entering 6-8th grades the Fall following the program are eligible to apply. Students from any schools (public, private, home schooled, etc) are eligible.
- An even number of males and females will be selected, in addition to an even split between 6, 7th and 8th grade students from a diverse range of demographic backgrounds.
- Immediate family members of Northeastern University faculty may apply to the program but are not given any special preference. They must still follow all other eligibility rules.
- Students may only participate in the program once.
- Upon entrance into the program there will be a $100 commitment fee.
- Parents/guardians and students must complete the online student application form.
(NOTE – see #3 for student essay info – should be done before starting the online application).
- Each student writes a 250 to 500-word essay which must signed by the guardian and be given to one of the teachers to also sign, to be sent with recommendation letters. You can download the essay form here: NUSSP Essay Form
- Each parent/guardian or student gives a recommendation form to the student’s current science teacher and current mathematics teacher. NUSSP Teacher Rec Forms
The recommendations are to be sent to Claire Duggan, The Center for STEM Education, Northeastern University, 153 Snell Engineering, 360 Huntington Avenue, Boston, MA 02115. All requested documents are due by the deadline date, March 31, 2017. If all requested documents are not received by the deadline date, the application will not be considered. A committee will select participants by May 1, 2017. Students may be interviewed prior to being selected, if deemed necessary. You will receive notification on the status of the application via email no later than May 2, 2017, with written notification soon after. If selected, one parent/guardian must attend the first hour of the first program day with the student for a short orientation. Failure to attend the orientation even if accepted will result in forfeiture of your slot in the program.
