NSF STEP-UP

The NSF STEP-UP project was a multi-year Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Talent Expansion Program – University Partnership (NU STEP-UP) that sought to increase the number of students receiving degrees in STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) disciplines. The program included STEM students from Northeastern University and collaborating Community Colleges (CC), with a special focus on recruiting and retaining traditionally underrepresented students in STEM studies.

The collaborating partners included: MassBay Community College (MBCC), Wellesley, MA; Middlesex Community College, Lowell/Bedford, MA; and Northern Essex Community College, Haverhill/Lawrence, MA. Additional funding from the Department of Homeland Security supported collaboration with Roxbury Community College (RCC).

stepupAn April 2013 Conference (Website, Abstract, Agenda) was held at MassBay Community College. The conference served to provide faculty from Community Colleges and partner universities the opportunity to share innovative programs and strategies supporting STEM pathways. This conference was the culmination of five years of partnership work between Northeastern University and partner Community Colleges. Additional sessions highlighted successful program models and strategies in place at institutions across the state of Massachusetts. Conference offerings were supported through funding by the National Science Foundation (Grant #0653090).
