Field Trip – Catholic Schools

On February 26th, a combined 64 fifth grade students from the Saint Columbkille Partnership School and South Boston Catholic Academy in Boston joined staff and students from The Center for STEM for a day of engineering exploration and discovery. Starting with an introduction to engineering and the design process, the students then designed, built, and tested their catapults. Looking at what worked and what didn’t, the students redesigned and improved their catapults, this time scoring much better in terms of accuracy and precision. After lunch, the students learned all about energy and then used multimeters to measure solar panel voltage as well as snap circuits to build series and parallel circuits. Students also had the opportunity to talk directly with volunteers, asking questions about science, engineering, math, and school in general.
